This week’s weird idea

Here’s how mine started:

Yes, that’s one of my major cardiac arteries almost completely blocked. I had felt off for at least two weeks, and it escalated until last weekend I was getting chest pains just by walking around the house.

So I went to Kaiser Urgent care Saturday, and I had no diagnostic signs of a heart attack. Nothing. They, very reasonably, sent me home with instructions to get a stress test after the long weekend. Then the frequency and severity of my chest pains increased on Sunday, so I went back to Urgent Care that night. They monitored me until the Cardiac docs could set me up for an angiogram Monday afternoon. And that’s when they found the blockage above. A half hour later, they had installed a stent to open the blockage, and now everything looks like this:

Ah, much better. The only signs left behind are various spots shaved on my body for EKG leads, and a single tiny hole in my wrist for the angiogram catheter. It’s the black speck between the two blue lines.

Yes, I am a very lucky guy. This is the equivalent of standing in the middle of the shootout at the OK Corral and walking out with just a hole in your hat. I’m home and walking around with no pain whatsoever (well, my knees…).

I have much appreciation for the nurses and doctors who took such good care of me, and much love to my family who encouraged me to get this thing seen to, and who always take such good care of me.

Some are calling this digital rendering “the most detailed image of a human cell ever captured.”

I have been fascinating by the interior workings of our cells since I took physiology in high school. So much is being done on such a small scale! And be sure to check out this interactive closeup of the mitochondria.

Have a listen

Bill Nighy (Sean of the Dead, Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest) is possibly the coolest man alove, a stealth introvert, and a warm delight answering questions from listeners about men’s fashion, music, and when it’s proper to leave a party (hint: whenever you want—even if you just walked in the door. Jumping over the back fence is even an option.). Currently top in my podcast queue.

And keeping breathing

Take some time for you. Treat yourself (diet, rest, exercise) well, please. The world needs people like you and lights like yours, and it’s hard for your light to shine if you’re exhausted. Oxygen mask, you first, etc.

Until we talk again, I remain,

Your pal,
