(a wee giftie for your stocking)
Cowboy Santa
When Santa brings presents on each Christmas night
He likes to surprise the last stop in his flight
He asks that last person what they want the best
And one year his route
Ended out
In the West
Now out on the prairie, fixing his shed
Was a hard-working cowboy whose handle was Ned
With so many worries all crowding his mind
He didn't hear
Reindeer
Landin' behind
Santa said, "Cowboy, I'm bringing you cheer!
You've been a good cowboy the whole gol-darned year!
New boots, or new ponies, or platinum spurs
You want it? You got it!
Just name it,
It's yours!
Ned straightened up and he wiped off his brow
He thought for a moment, and then said, "Well now,
I don't need nothing you find in the stores.
But what I could stand
Is a hand
With the chores!"
Now Santa just wanted to get home for a meal
But he'd made a promise, and a deal is a deal
So he put down his sack and he put on a smile
And he said,
"OK, Ned,
Guess I'll stay fer awhile."
The first thing they did was get Santa some duds
That he could wear working in dust and the mud
With boots, a bandana, and a good wide-brimmed hat
And some extra-large chaps
(He's perhaps
A bit fat!)
They repaired the corral, and the fences beyond
So the cattle could drink, they chopped holes in the pond
New shoes for the horses and more slops for the pigs
He'd near
No idear
That the ranch was this big!
Before they both knew it, up come the night.
Surprisingly, Santa felt sad, just a mite.
He said, after spreading the last bale of hay:
"I'm sore,
But I shore
Had a good time today!"
Ned said, "Santa, you're welcome back here anytime!"
And they ate up some grub, and they jawed till bedtime
And when Santa turned in, tuckered out and footsore,
Ned learned something new
Yes, it's true
Santa snores!
